New Tribes Mission - Brazil

Phillilp serves as a missionary with New Tribes Mission, a faith based, inter-denominational, international mission board. He was born and raised in Brazil to second generation missionaries. Because his mother is Brazilian and his father is American, he retains dual citizenship.

Phillip came to the United States in 2002 to pursue specialized training with New Tribes Mission in preparation for Tribal Church Planting. In December of 2007  He completed 4 1/2 years of training which included a 2  year Bible College, a one year Missions Institute focusing on cross cultural communication and ministry, a year of Linguistic Training, and a semester of specialized linguistics.

He recently has returned to Brazil to work with a indigenous people group in the Amazon region of Brazil.  He wants to not simply see converts but a New Testament church established--which is truly self-supporting, self-propagating, self-governing and most importantly one which truly glorifies God. A healthy emphasis will be placed on culture and language in order to assure clear communication of the Word of God in reaching this goal.

Phillip's News and Prayer Requests

July 2009

Hello my dear Friends,

A friend was just asking me the other day when I was going to put out another update and I told him, “Soon.” So much has happened since my last update and so much has yet to happen but I confess that I did not realize I had let so much time go by since my last update. I’m sorry to leave many of you hanging for so long.

As I recall I left you by asking for prayer as I decide where on the field of Brasil the Lord would have me work. Well,...I’m still in that process. I was invited to travel to several tribal locations all across the country to see where I might fit in and I have been doing that ever since. In fact I’m in the middle of one such trip right now!

For that reason I’m sending this e-mail as a “tie-over” until I have finished my travels and can share with you all more conclusively about the direction the Lord is leading me in. Up till now I have traveled to several of our training Institutes and to the Karaja tribe where I stayed for two weeks. That time was filled with precious fellowship and exposure to the harsh realities of tribal church planting.

Right now I am in Manaus, agian, and will be catching a boat down the Amazon to the port city of Santarem, which is a day and half’s journey from here. From there I will be visiting the Kaxuyana tribe for two weeks and then from there I will head into another tribe for a second two weeks before returning to home base in Anapolis.

During these next four weeks I’ll have sporadic internet connection, but I would love to hear from you. I’ve managed to catch some of you on skype, facebook, and through e-mail but I would love to keep touch with the rest of you through any of those avenues. For those of you who might not realize it I have posted a few articles on my NTM website (www.ntm.org/phillip_schuring) and I’ve posted many pictures on my Facebook page as well. My user name in Facebook and Skype is “Phillip Schuring.” I’ll be posting pictures of the Karaja trip today and soon to follow pictures of my boat trip down the Amazon!

In closing I’d just like to remind you that this would not be possible with out you! You are my life line in many ways and you are just as much a part of this “journey” as I am. I continue to covet your prayers in deciding where I should set anchor and for humility in this time of decision making.

Hello Everyone,
Your probably wondering what I have been doing and where I have been - and with good reason. It's been two months since I've not updated you. For those two months I was tucked away in the jungle and had little or no internet. I miss you all a ton and thought of you often as I was out in the middle of no where. You'll notice this update is a little big but I didn't know how to cut anymore out without leaving you in the dark. I'll be posting more stories on my blog site soon so keep an eye on it. As always if you can't open the attachment let me know.

Phillip Schuring
